Danovel is a Singapore sofa company with an industry reputation for specialty on handcrafted fabrics. They approached us at NextOfKin Creatives to help them rethink a single sitter that would be launched as part of their green initiatives business strategy. We knew immediately that we had to start diving deeper into the production methods, processes and engage the Danovel stakeholders to think out of the box!
We conducted a brainstorming workshop with the stakeholders on the various production touch-points and highlighted the over-usage of glue and staples. The bulky pieces resulted in transportation premiums. Modular flat-packed parts could eliminate glue and result in logistics efficiency. Add-on functions would add value to the product. The brainstorm results set the boundaries for the design framework.
We started to conceptualize modular structures that can be assembled together with simple joints. These joints allowed additional small accessories like coffee trays or lamps to be mounted on. The no glue no staple approach helped to reduce the time needed in production. The soft-upholstery were pre-sewn with (recycled) fabrics that fits snuggly into the seating and backrest area through the joints and strong magnets.
The modular character of the frames allowed it to be flat-packed into a much smaller footprint, with the soft upholstery folded into the box. The concept opens up possibility of using recycle aluminum’s lower density for the desired weight and robustness, and it’s high corrosion resistance makes it ideal as a long lasting object. In many ways the carbon footprint were significantly reduced.
The final product was launched with at the Singapore Green Pavillion 2013 to showcase the best green practices of Singapore furniture manufacturers. More importantly this design propelled Danovel with a set mindset in green design and allowed them to expand their market into non-traditional sofa designs in the global market.
